Every day, the UN, international organizations and the media claim that everyone in Gaza is starving to death because they have no food and every day Israel’s COGAT aid coordination agency lists exactly how many trucks filled with humanitarian aid have actually entered Gaza. On Jan 2, for example , 189 trucks filled with aid entered Gaza. Only 147 trucks however were collected on the Gazan side with another 800 trucks worth of aid waiting to be collected. During winters, I would take the F train to school and over summer I would ride it to Coney Island until I could tell which subway station I was approaching by the color of the wall tiles. I would take a breath as the subway train left the dark tunnels, rails sparking and the lights occasionally flickering out, to ascend to the ‘high line’ overlooking McDonald Avenue. In 1978, the Carter administration made a deal with General Omar Torrijos, the uniformed socialist strongman who had seized power in Panama, to abandon America’s crown jewel. Myths were once rare and exclusive things. The stories told around fires made up the soul of a culture. From the printing press to the internet, technology helped change all that. The oral became written and the written became all too easy to duplicate. Stories ceased to be communal and became personal. A written scroll was a painstaking effort, too precious to be hoarded, while a book could be one of a million copies. Everyone could have their own stories. When communal stories became personal stories: some things were gained and others were lost. Religious stories (there is a reason that the Bible remains the quintessential bestseller), national myths and cultural lore gave way to stories of personal empowerment.
