The New Civil War

A civil war has begun.

This civil war is very different than the last one. There are no cannons or cavalry charges. The left doesn’t want to secede. It wants to rule. Political conflicts become civil wars when one side refuses to accept the existing authority. The left has rejected all forms of authority that it doesn’t control.

The left has rejected the outcome of the last two presidential elections won by Republicans. It has rejected the judicial authority of the Supreme Court when it decisions don’t accord with its agenda. It rejects the legislative authority of Congress when it is not dominated by the left.

It rejected the Constitution so long ago that it hardly bears mentioning.

It was for total unilateral executive authority under Obama. And now it’s for states unilaterally deciding what laws they will follow. (As long as that involves defying immigration laws under Trump, not following them under Obama.) It was for the sacrosanct authority of the Senate when it held the majority. Then it decried the Senate as an outmoded institution when the Republicans took it over.

It was for Obama defying the orders of Federal judges, no matter how well grounded in existing law, and it is for Federal judges overriding any order by Trump on any grounds whatsoever. It was for Obama penalizing whistleblowers, but now undermining the government from within has become “patriotic”.

There is no form of legal authority that the left accepts as a permanent institution. It only utilizes forms of authority selectively when it controls them. But when government officials refuse the orders of the duly elected government because their allegiance is to an ideology whose agenda is in conflict with the President and Congress, that’s not activism, protest, politics or civil disobedience; it’s treason.

After losing Congress, the left consolidated its authority in the White House. After losing the White House, the left shifted its center of authority to Federal judges and unelected government officials. Each defeat led the radicalized Democrats to relocate from more democratic to less democratic institutions.

This isn’t just hypocrisy. That’s a common political sin. Hypocrites maneuver within the system. The left has no allegiance to the system. It accepts no laws other than those dictated by its ideology.

Democrats have become radicalized by the left. This doesn’t just mean that they pursue all sorts of bad policies. It means that their first and foremost allegiance is to an ideology, not the Constitution, not our country or our system of government. All of those are only to be used as vehicles for their ideology.

That’s why compromise has become impossible.

Our system of government was designed to allow different groups to negotiate their differences. But those differences were supposed to be based around finding shared interests. The most profound of these shared interests was that of a common country based around certain civilizational values. The left has replaced these Founding ideas with radically different notions and principles. It has rejected the primary importance of the country. As a result it shares little in the way of interests or values.

Instead it has retreated to cultural urban and suburban enclaves where it has centralized tremendous amounts of power while disregarding the interests and values of most of the country. If it considers them at all, it is convinced that they will shortly disappear to be replaced by compliant immigrants and college indoctrinated leftists who will form a permanent demographic majority for its agenda.

But it couldn’t wait that long because it is animated by the conviction that enforcing its ideas is urgent and inevitable. And so it turned what had been a hidden transition into an open break.

In the hidden transition, its authority figures had hijacked the law and every political office they held to pursue their ideological agenda. The left had used its vast cultural power to manufacture a consensus that was slowly transitioning the country from American values to its values and agendas. The right had proven largely impotent in the face of a program which corrupted and subverted from within.

The left was enormously successful in this regard. It was so successful that it lost all sense of proportion and decided to be open about its views and to launch a political power struggle after losing an election.

The Democrats were no longer being slowly injected with leftist ideology. Instead the left openly took over and demanded allegiance to open borders, identity politics and environmental fanaticism. The exodus of voters wiped out the Democrats across much of what the left deemed flyover country.

The left responded to democratic defeats by retreating deeper into undemocratic institutions, whether it was the bureaucracy or the corporate media, while doubling down on its political radicalism. It is now openly defying the outcome of a national election using a coalition of bureaucrats, corporations, unelected officials, celebrities and reporters that are based out of its cultural and political enclaves.

It has responded to a lost election by constructing sanctuary cities and states thereby turning a cultural and ideological secession into a legal secession. But while secessionists want to be left alone authoritarians want everyone to follow their laws. The left is an authoritarian movement that wants total compliance with its dictates with severe punishments for those who disobey.

The left describes its actions as principled. But more accurately they are ideological. Officials at various levels of government have rejected the authority of the President of the United States, of Congress and of the Constitution because those are at odds with their radical ideology. Judges have cloaked this rejection in law. Mayors and governors are not even pretending that their actions are lawful.

The choices of this civil war are painfully clear.

We can have a system of government based around the Constitution with democratically elected representatives. Or we can have one based on the ideological principles of the left in which all laws and processes, including elections and the Constitution, are fig leaves for enforcing social justice.

But we cannot have both.

Some civil wars happen when a political conflict can’t be resolved at the political level. The really bad ones happen when an irresolvable political conflict combines with an irresolvable cultural conflict.

That is what we have now.

The left has made it clear that it will not accept the lawful authority of our system of government. It will not accept the outcome of elections. It will not accept these things because they are at odds with its ideology and because they represent the will of large portions of the country whom they despise.

The question is what comes next.

The last time around growing tensions began to explode in violent confrontations between extremists on both sides. These extremists were lauded by moderates who mainstreamed their views. The first Republican president was elected and rejected. The political tensions led to conflict and then civil war.

The left doesn’t believe in secession. It’s an authoritarian political movement that has lost democratic authority. There is now a political power struggle underway between the democratically elected officials and the undemocratic machinery of government aided by a handful of judges and local elected officials.

What this really means is that there are two competing governments; the legal government and a treasonous anti-government of the left. If this political conflict progresses, agencies and individuals at every level of government will be asked to demonstrate their allegiance to these two competing governments. And that can swiftly and explosively transform into an actual civil war.

There is no sign that the left understands or is troubled by the implications of the conflict it has initiated. And there are few signs that Democrats properly understand the dangerous road that the radical left is drawing them toward. The left assumes that the winners of a democratic election will back down rather than stand on their authority. It is unprepared for the possibility that democracy won’t die in darkness.

Civil wars end when one side is forced to accept the authority of the other. The left expects everyone to accept its ideological authority. Conservatives expect the left to accept Constitutional authority. The conflict is still political and cultural. It’s being fought in the media and within the government. But if neither side backs down, then it will go beyond words as both sides give contradictory orders.

The left is a treasonous movement. The Democrats became a treasonous organization when they fell under the sway of a movement that rejects our system of government, its laws and its elections. Now their treason is coming to a head. They are engaged in a struggle for power against the government. That’s not protest. It’s not activism. The old treason of the sixties has come of age. A civil war has begun.

This is a primal conflict between a totalitarian system and a democratic system. Its outcome will determine whether we will be a free nation or a nation of slaves.

Hope it doesn't come to this, but Venezuela seems to be the best model. Infrastructure degrades towards 3rd world levels. Urban sanctuaries devolve towards crime, looting, and rioting in the struggle for food. But since many sanctuaries are sea ports, food can be shipped in by sea as long as someone is willing to sell it. Urban masses subsist near starvation levels on rice and beans. Quasi-official paramilitary groups enforce some minimal standards of order. Could end up like Cuba, with every block under strict surveillance.

I agree. The mainstream media is now simply the propaganda wing of the DNC. I'm concerned that this will make the Left bolder and more willing to take chances as they know their behavior will be excused and justified in the press.

Is the left merely allies of Islam, or are they being co-opted by Moslems? Iranian communists were allies of the Ayatollah -- until he gained power and them disappeared.
How much of the funding of the left comes in the form of Saudi and Iranian riyals? I find it hard to believe Soros is their sole source of funding.

The right sees the conduct of America by the Constitution; the best way adults have devised to run a nation so far. The left sees its own absolute moral certainty as their solipsism where all else moves to their petulant whim.

Whether through cowardice or forbearance, the right does nobody any good by further humoring the deranged left.

  6. I believe that Americans blush when you assert that this is an actual war. It fits every societal and political definition of one. In this the early 21st century this is how most wars are fought. The Syrian and Yemeni atrocities, the African world wars are all of the last century. They are tribal and savage surely but they are only a subset of what wars 'are' now. The PLA (Chinese Army) understood this 20 years ago that wars are 'total'. They are fought in every single avenue of the modern world they can be; military, political, media, internet, espionage, economic, social media. The left implicitly gets this because political insurgencies have worked this way for more than a hundred years. This is an actual war. And we who not of the left better wake up and get it or the left will roll us. They know what they're fighting for and how. Do you? Do you really get it?

Isn't it odd that the hypocrisy of the left will NOW embrace states rights when defending sanctuary cities, religion when Obama finds it convenient to quote the Bible on loving your fellow man, dissent is patriotic only when Republicans hold office, and elections have consequences only when they hold office? Lastly I find the biggest laugh is since President Trump took office they all of a sudden are worried about how to pay for his projects but have no concern about finacing their own.

Yes we are facing a civil war which already has begun, but it began 50 years ago by letting government grow like kudzu. Neither the left nor the right any longer has faith in government being run by the "consent of the people". Wasn't the election of President Trump based on the dissatisfaction of the Republican "establishment" not paying attention to it's constituents but also on the left Bernie Sanders based his campaign on "Giving the Government back to the people". Although his idea of giving government back drifted more toward socialism than "A government by and for the people" showed to be very popular among the young voters.

But this civil war isn't limited to strictly government viewpoint. It evolved over many years from a society and culture that thrives on entitlements, tribalism and defining deviancy down. Where Republicans exhibited what Margaret Thatcher called the "ratchet effect". This involves of instead of eliminating left policies they conceded points to the left that were modified and enhanced through legislation in the future. Self interest politicians who on both sides of the aisle insist on passing a bill and reading what it involves afterward. Leaders who defend passed bills by looking for the clean side of the turd to pick it up and in no sense of the word could be labeled "The Best and the Brightest".

Name one official of the most flagrantly corrupt administration in US history that has suffered any criminal consequences.

The war between the left & right in DC is more accurately characterized as the Harlem Globetrotters v. the Washington Generals. Pure theater.

The actual conflict is between the governed and the ruling class.

    Both are well armed.

The game becomes total subjugation before hot war breaks out.

The culture appear to have more of a subjugation patina than the gritty blood-&-guts required to deposed an entrenched regime.

  11. The radical left is on the wrong side of history, totally. Democrats are in ‘death throes’, which means they are at their most dangerous state as enemies of America, again, from 150 years ago, flailing about for any purchase or semblance of being in control, as they have been routed from their “divine secular atheist destiny”, all of their own disturbed utopian imagination.

Daniel, as always, you set the standard of an essay on reality, examining the treason and attempt to otherthrow of the US government, by a foul and filthy means, as an enemy gang from within the gates, against our duly and legally elected Constitutional government, as a Democratic Republic government. Not as a democratic gang, which all plain democracies eventually fall into.

It is plain before our eyes, and at a pace that astonishes, with promises being kept, by a magnificent guy, DJT, and his wonderful family, and all this accomplished against a miserable and dangerous enemy, the dyeing, criminal Democrats. Whether unions, or business, or investors, Americans are massively beginning to respond to the promise of resurrection from the first American true enemy regime, under which they hibernated, that was the hussein regime, “colonial” America haters, composed from top down, of evil socialist treasonous muslim brotherhood supporters of our enemy. Foreign governments also are responding to a new light shining in the distance, working, almost dreaming, now for a possible rebirth of peace in the Mid-East. Never mind the fundamental problem of the long term with them, to be solved.

I personally have been aware of exactly what you have given voice too, for as long as DJT has been elected and in office. I am more than a little gratified you have given voice to this for the world, Daniel, and especially loyal Patriot Americans. I was one of the small amount of us who knew what hussein really was at least 6 months prior to the first vote, knew he was a criminal little boy, of evil in his background. I had read his book, and viewed his past, it was obvious. Many, many, Americans had their chance for warnings about him. DVD’s reviewing the facts were widely distributed freely, but thrown in the trash, by most irresponsible ‘don’t trouble me’ Americans who received them, I know, I counted the trash. Worse, he had zero qualifications of any kind except an empty no accomplishment past, filled with ominous warnings of danger to America, in word and deed.

True Americans, have been in shock to see how large a group of mutinous socialists and various other radicals, and otherwise ‘nwo’ types have been behaving as little children rudely awakened from an imaginary video game in their heads, (for a whole generation long of millennials), to learn that the game they called The American Heritage is real, and it is the Founders and our American country, and real Americans won’t have whiny immature imagining poseurs make it their evil playground, any longer. And as before, we will not be denied, at any cost! Real American Patriots, who know God and right, have demonstrated that for 240 years so far!

This is America, the country dedicated to Freedom, Equality, the Pursuit of Happiness, under our universal God of Western Civilization, of Jews and Christians, distinguished by the Commandments, not of the pagan god of leftism, socialism, genocide, the “collective”, the “nwo”, and empty universal evil, and the infamous god of the word, “whatever”! Yes, of course included are Catholics, Mormons, Protestants, and atheists too (many understand God, but reject Him, which they will have to deal with eventually), and others who variably do understand the real God, all of whom shall meet our judgements, eventually, as Believers who have tried at least, or otherwise.

God Bless America, now and forever!

  12. The Democrats have, because of their unbridled and undisguised malice towards Trump (and by extension, towards Americans and the country),and by allowing the Left to govern their priorities and tactics, painted themselves into a corner that can only result in a recognition of their treason and desperation to run and ruin the country. Unfortunately, the Dems are not a separate country or collection of states as the Southern states were in the antebellum period and cannot just secede from the Union. They will remain in Congress until they are taken to the woodshed by the electorate come the next elections. And until then they will sweat bullets to sabotage Trump.

  16. America, like Liberty, is an idea, borne from experience, which is the royal road to truth. Implicit in this definition is the concept of Trial and Error. Thus, only with error, does an investor learn the lesson he has already paid for. Further, JFK said, "my father taught me that an error is not yet a mistake, unless it is repeated". This information rings true for agnostics, skeptics, and scientists, steeped in the world of reality, where, if your idea doesn't work, you change your hypothesis, not redouble efforts to find a scapegoat to explain failure.

However the realm of metaphysics (philosophy, religion, law and politics) is not bound by the constraints of physics. Instead they have arrogated to themselves a game-theory that allows moving the goalposts if you can't move the ball. As a result, existential realists (free thinkers, libertarians, republican constitutionalists, our grandparents) have no idea how to honorably contend with an adversary that sees honour as a weakness to be exploited, not a sign of morality. They forget the timeless maxim, "all's fair in love and war". What does that mean? Perhaps if you lust for power, your only morality is survival. Or maybe, "winning isn't everything, its the only thing".

These ideas find their most viable expression in our sports culture, war by other means, where the rules of engagement include fixed goal posts. However all bets are off when ideologies take over for ideas.

“Ideologies are oversimplified, apparently coherent representations. They are used as a tool to indoctrinate and acquire power. Ideologies are the opium of the intellectuals who believe that reality should conform to their vision and not the other way round”. (Mirans)

One distinguishing feature of the difference between physicists and meta physicists is found in the old joke about “the English always think they are so smart, but the Germans know they are” (my apologies to my ancestors, on both sides; I'm trying my best to make a point here, in difficult terrain). There is no (pseudo-)intellectual more certain of his conclusions than the one who has pulled it out of thin air (like our world fiat money system) and refused to acknowledge error. Apparently, error is for those who get it wrong, not those in the process of becoming.

Mirans, again: “For about fifty years now the University of Berkeley has been an echo chamber for the ideas of Gramsci and the Frankfurt school. The world has changed but they have stayed the same: sclerotic, stubborn and repetitive. Ironically they have become exactly like the "bourgeoisie" they despised, stuck in the same platitudes and stereotypes. They are poster children for the ridicule of conformist, aging, non-conformism. They should get in their psychedelic Volkswagen vanand drive into the sunset and out of our lives.

To sum up: this is an existential war for the future of our children. Which side are you on? If you are neutral, then all is lost, and all is fair. Socialism (western political pities) has failed. Where will the resources come from to repay the $200 trillion debt (Bill Bonner, Doug Casey) run up on our spoiled society's trust account? From a place called Nowhere.

  17. " ... [the left's] first and foremost allegiance is to an ideology, not the Constitution, not our country or our system of government. All of those are only to be used as vehicles for their ideology."

    In a nutshell.

We are fighting the worst kind of civil war. One based not only on the physical annihilation of a people, but on the systematic subversion of all its principles, laws, and beliefs.

What I call a "physical" war - one fought with armies and weapons - is horrible, brutal, devastating. But it eventually ends precisely because once a country runs out of ammo, armies and most of its able-bodied citizens, it's either surrender and slavery, or total annihilation.

The kind of civil war we're fighting now (are we?) is the proverbial death by a thousand cuts. It is much worse than a "physical" war because it kills not so much the body, but the spirit. It bleeds the morale, the principles and beliefs of a people to death, at best; slavery, at worst. Culture, heritage, identity are all erased to be replaced by those of the conqueror's.

IMHO, we risk ending like Winston Smith, in Orwell's 1984: "cured" of our "insanity" - our rejection of "just, loving, egalitarian" Nanny Government, and/or NWO. Like Winston, we risk being made to "understand" at last - and end - our "stubborn, self-willed rejection" of the love of Big Government for the people — a love that, like Winston, we will return quite happily as we are "reeducated" to accept it "for the greater good."

Nonsense from someone respectable might influence a few, but it is still nonsense. Watch the Radical Left committing suicide, and don't try to distract them. Their hair has been on fire since November and they are totally bald, now, and see it in their mirrors. When the Supreme Court is stabilized this Friday, they will see the game is over. True politicians have no idealistic values, and they will start dropping out, soon enough, rather than die on this "hill". Re-election is their most beloved sacrament, and they will bow their heads and genuflect to it, one by one. Who will be first? They all don't want to be the one, but there will be one, and it could come on the Gorsuch vote, although it's unlikely. Point is that it is coming. Watch and stop thinking stupid civil war nonsense.

Another epic essay Daniel. And some good comments after it. Just two points. First, a major difference that was touched upon between this war we are in and what we historically refer to as The Civil War is that this war against us is aimed at not separation (secession) but conquest. What we call The Civil War was not a true civil war, but a war of independence. The South did not want to take over Washington D.C. any more than General Washington wanted to take over London in that war of independence.

The second point is that I would not say that this conflict is between a totalitarian system and a democratic system, but rather one between a totalitarian system and a republican system (lower case "r"). Even if the left was a clear democratic majority, they would still not be authorized by our system of constitutionally limited government to control us. In other words, even if they were a democratic majority, we would be legally justified in fighting them. The reverse is not true.

I will start by quoting your last sentence: "Its outcome will determine whether we will be a free nation or a nation of slaves." Isn't it ironic, that the Democrat party was the party of slavery? When in control of Congress, they enacted a gag rule, forbidding the use of the word "Slavery" to muzzle the abolitionists. It was the Democrats (President, Governor, Supreme Court) that saw no wrong in bankrupting and incarcerating US citizens of Japanese ancestry. Of course, who came up with the Jim Crow laws?

The Democrat party is the party of Control.

The problem with the current rejection and insurrection against duly constituted government is that sooner or later, someone will act on it. Even a cursory review of insurrections over ideology (The Reformation, Spanish Civil War, fall of Czarist Russia, China Civil War), shows they tend to be brutal, can be lengthy, and can take decades to rebuild from. Some countries never recover (Spain, Vietnam, probably Cuba and Venezuela).

We came pretty close to a repeat of the late 60's and early 70's insurrection the past few years, but the big spark never generated. Unfortunately, we have a real toxic brew if leftists, anarchists, cartel related gangs, and jihadi's. I hope I am wrong, but this could be a very rough year.

Thanks for spreading the word of this very real danger.

Just as there was a Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, we have lived through the Rise of the American Empire, and we are witnessing the Fall of the American Empire. Liberalism is killing our Society.

???to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God.

    It may be true!
Our system of government was designed to allow different groups to negotiate their differences. But those differences were supposed to be based around finding shared interests. The most profound of these shared interests was that of your common republic

NOT FOR A POLITICAL SELF-NEGATING IDEALISTIC POSTURE
